LABORATORY OF REMOTE SENSING, SPECTROSCOPY AND GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS, FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE, A.U.TH.
The Laboratory of Remote Sensing, Spectroscopy and Geographic Information Systems serves educational and research needs and treats the collection and processing of earth observation data by applying terrestrial, aerial and satellite remote sensing methods using appropriate sensors. In addition, the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tool performs the spatial analysis procedures and creates the appropriate spatio-temporal databases, the corresponding thematic maps and the corresponding spatio-temporal simulation and fusion of these levels of information so that they can the corresponding services to the end users are produced.
The main areas in which the Laboratory utilizes the data collected through remote sensing are the agricultural applications of remote sensing, spectroscopy and GIS, including the wider area of agricultural activity and its effects on the environment:
- Monitoring and evaluation of agricultural resources (crop mapping, digital soil mapping, agricultural water use, aquaculture mapping, changes in land use over time, etc.).
- Monitoring the effects of agricultural activity on the environment (modeling of soil erosion, mapping of downstream wetland and aquatic vegetation degradation, monitoring of downstream water body quality, development of early warning systems, erosion risk assessment, erosion risk, etc.).
- Precision agriculture applications. Report of the qualitative and quantitative properties of soil, water and vegetation (estimation of leaf area index, its evapotranspiration, soil moisture, biomass, diagnosis of malnutrition, pathogens and other stressors of agricultural crops, etc.).
